Welcome to Donglaishun (Xizhimen Branch)! Opened in 1903, the 105-year-old Donglaishun is one of the most authentic Muslim restaurants in Beijing, featuring instant-boiled lamb hotpot. Donglaishun hotpot is characterized by the fine lamb slices from a special breed of lamb at the Xilingol Grassland in Inner Mongolia, as well as the old-fashioned brass cooking pot filled with broth which is heated by a clump of charcoal. Submerge the thin slice in the pot for a few seconds, and dip it into the thick sauce made with roasted sesame, pickled garlic and Chinese chives, you must enjoy the authentic flavor of Donglaishun hotpot.
According to a legend, Genghis Khan, the first emperor of the Yuan Dynasty, once led his army on an expedition through a severe winter. To fulfill an urgent military task, the soldiers had no time to cook and decided to butcher sheep, cut the mutton in half-frozen slices with sabers, and put them into pots filled with boiling water. The delicious boiled mutton that came out of this experiment instantly got the soldiers’ spirits up and helped them defeat the approaching enemy in no time. Since then, this particular way of cooking instant-boiled mutton spread far and wide in China.
Other than the traditional hotpot, Donglaishun offers a wide range of other Muslim dishes including the unique roast whole sheep, which is a must try for travelers.
